CLASS EXPECTATIONS

Weekly Homework Expectation for students and parents In order to receive 2 semester credits, students need to be in the subject for 100 hours per credit/5.5 hours per week for a 17-week semester. This will be accomplished by 1.5 hours in class and an average of 3 hours a week of homework. Students will complete and self-correct most homework. The learning that is accomplished in self-correction is invaluable. Study guides will be given for all exams. Parents will be expected to make sure their student has completed all tasks for the week, and proctor some tests at home. Tests should be taken without notes, books, dictionaries, or internet help. Each test needs to have a parent signature that certifies that the test was taken under testing standards in order for credit to be given. Homework consists of 20%, Quizzes will be 30% and Tests will be 50% of the student’s grade. Moodle will be utilized for homework uploads and grades.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
  • SPANISH 1: This course is designed for students with little or no previous knowledge of Spanish. Previous experience will be helpful, but not mandatory. Students will learn basic grammar, using the Bob Jones Spanish 1 materials. Students are expected to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, basic reading and writing as well as an appreciation of Latino culture. The course will include some oral presentations. Being a Christian curriculum, the content allows the students to learn words and phrases that are pertinent to sharing their faith in Spanish.

  • SPANISH 2: This class is a continuation from Spanish 1. If you were in my Spanish 1 class, no new materials should be purchased; the supply fee covers what is needed. This course is designed for students who have completed chapters 1-15 of the BJU Spanish 1 book. We will finish the book in this course. Students will learn basic grammar, using the BJU Spanish 1 materials. Students are expected to develop the four language skills of speaking, listening, basic reading and writing as well as an appreciation of Latino culture. Being a Christian curriculum, the content allows the students to learn words and phrases that are pertinent to sharing their faith in Spanish. Because of the once-a-week structure, writing and reading will be the strongest skill, with listening and speaking done throughout the class.

Spanish Teacher

Christy
Burdick

I have been teaching for most of my life. In California, I was an elementary teacher of Spanish students in their primary language. I taught reading, writing and math in Spanish to the students. Upon moving to Indiana, I taught my children at home. After homeschooling my children for 10 years, I have stayed involved by teaching in the north side homeschool co-operatives. For the last 16 years, I have taught all levels of Spanish to all levels of students. I have led mission trips for teens to the countries of Peru and Nicaragua. I currently reside in Westfield with my husband. When I am not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy fellowshipping with other believers, spending time with my four grown children and eating dark chocolate!
